Mini Demo
Persephone is the Greek goddess of springtime. The young goddess was abducted by Hades, the god of the Underworld and was eventually rescued by her mother, but since she had snacked on 6 pomegranite seeds in the meantime she was forced marry Hades and stay with him, one month for each seed she has eaten. So Persephone stays with her husband during the fall and winter and rejoins her mother spring and summer of each year. (How did you think we got those 4 seasons anyway? :-)
Here is a very condensed version of how the graphic Persephone was
created.
Layout sketch for Persephone. The graphic was originally going to be
created as a digital painting, but after some consideration I decided to
use a photo manipulation for the goddess and add it to a digitally created
background.
The model is photographed using a onion in place of a pomegrante. We
later borrowed a real
pomegrante from a neighbors tree which I photographed and overpainted
to add to the graphic
Here I have begun to manipulate or enhance the photo. Since our model
is basically a template, her hair and
skin tones have been repainted and darker undertones of the clothing
were roughly sketched in.
The body has been made longer and more stylized. Also I have added
the borrowed pomegranite as a layer.
Next I created the column from another photo but had to hand
draw the bases/caps
The marble textures were added with Paint Shop Pro's Air Brush Tool
then "Smudged" to blend them.
A pastoral scene was digitally painted using several different brushes
and filters. The Italian Cypress are from another photo. I lthink these
trees have an almost unworldly look. The columns were then added as a layer.

Here a few more trees and shadows have been added to create a spacial
perspective.Datura flowers were "cut and pasted" to the top of the column
as kind of a vine to symbolize death and rebirth. The model was added asa
new layer and her gauzey attire was painted using the Air Brush tool again
at a very low opacity/density so I could keep much of the farbic transparent.Naturally
I had to use a Greek style font for the goddess' name and used a
3d cut-out effect.
