Artist Statement
Nanci Jennings
I live in the suburbs of Southern California and hold
an Ascocites Degree in Art. My artistic interests are in fantasy
illustration, spiritual and esoteric art, advertising logos, web design
and photography. I prefer to work in digital media and photo manipulation,
but also employ colored pencil, acrylics, ink, and watercolors. My inspiration
comes from nature, mythology, folklore and most often.....dreams.
Glossary of Terms used in the Gallery
Digital Painting -Graphic was created within a paint program for example
JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 .
I also use a HyperPen electronic tablet by AIPTEK for drawing images
and fine details. Sometimes these begin as sketches that are scanned then
painted with software. 3d software used is Amorphium.
Mixed Media- Graphic was also created with a paint program but begins
as a photograph and/or detail drawing or painting that is scanned and painted
or enhanced.
Photo Manipulation- (usually used with the term "mixed media".)
A digital or scanned photo is enhanced or manipulated using software
paint programs and imagination.
Photo manipulation is now offered as a service.
Digital images are taken with a Fuji FinePrint 2800Z.
Photos with a Canon Rebel 35mm.
Acrylic on Canvas - is exactly that. Photographed then scanned.
Watercolor- is actual watercolors, not electronic painting.
"Spectracolors" and "Prismacolors" are soft lead colored pencils that
blend beautifully and are great products.
Pen and Ink- I 'm sure everyone knows what this is. I use a rapidograph
type pen, or fine point rolling pen if I am not going to use a watercolor
wash.

Persephone
-
mixed media (Spring 2002)
-
Persephone is the Greek goddess of springtime. She was abducted by Hades
and after eating 6 pomegranite seeds had to marry him and become the queen
of the underworld for six months of each year. (during fall and winter)
The vining Datura symbolize death and rebirth. Kendall, the model was over-painted
digitally. This was originally going to be a completely digital painting
with no photo manipulation.
-
Winter Dreaming
-
digital painting (Dec 2000) for EsotericArt.com Winter Gallery
-
and the world lay sleeping awaiting the goddess' return in spring.
-
When the Veil Thins
-
photo manipulation (mixed media)
-
Many traditions tell of the veil between this world and the next
being the "thinnest" from Oct 31- Nov 2. and these days are celebrated
as Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos.
-
September Tides
-
digital painting
-
This was scanned from a sketch I did many years ago and never completed,
as I was not sure what medium I wanted to use at the time. The dolphin
rider was inspired by Patrica McKillip's "Riddle Master Trilogy" though
this is not exactly "fan art" as there is no character in these books is
described as doing this. This is one of my favorite authors and her attention
to detail and description are wonderful.

The Magic and the Wonder
-
digital painting (Yule 1999)
-
Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess; she in the dust of whose feet
are the hosts of heaven, whose body encircles the universe. (Doreen Valiente,
The
Charge of the Goddess)
-
The Raven Himself
-
mixed media (Fall 2000)
-
The trees were photographed in Grand Canyon then repainted with Photo Shop.
-
From MacBeth, "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance
of Duncan under my battlements"
-
The Last Resort
-
digital painting (Summer 1999) for the millennium exhibit http://www.esotericart.com

A very long time ago, Easter Island was a tropical paradise. Her lush green
forests were reportedly a study in bio diversity. Then her people began
to build the moai, giant stone statues dedicated to their gods. As their
obsession to build more and bigger statues grew, the people began to cut
down the forests faster then they could grow, to build ramps on which to
move the moai from the quarries. Eventually they cut down every tree on
the island, which destroyed her fragile ecosystem. With the forests gone
the climate began to change and the land became barren with less and less
rainfall. The people grew hungry as game grew scarce and the domestic animals
did not thrive on the few plants that now grew on the island. Sea birds
no longer nested here, but on the rocks far offshore. With no timber to
build new fishing boats or repair the old, the people soon exhausted the
supply of fish in the harbors and over harvested the shellfish on the beaches
until they too were scarce. In the end they had exploited all of the island's
natural resources. Without boats, the people could not escape and were
doomed to live and die on this wasteland that was their legacy. Could Easter
Island be a ecological miniature of Earth? Where will we go when all of
our resources are exhausted, for isn't our world just as much, an island?
Pretty deep thought huh?

Elvis of Yore
-
mixed media ( Fall 1999)
-
I was thinking about creating a series of graphics that featured Elvis
sightings at mysterious places around the world.. Maybe I should have titled
this, "The King of the Dance". Get it? The runes around the frame do say
something if you care to decipher them. (no, it's not "be sure to drink
your ovaltine")
-
Huntress (Samantha the Huntress)
-
mixed media (April 2000) digital painting & photo manipulation.
-
Hey little buddies: soft and silky night walkers Dangerous species
Tiptoe menace long grass stalkers on my bed: no butter melting in
your jaws. Bonding monster --Lethal weapon wearing claws. Let's go out
to hunt by numbers. (Hunt By Numbers-from Dot Com by
Jethro Tull- )
-
Her Waters
-
mixed media- photo manipulation & digital painting (Summer 2001)
-
Created for the Healing
Gallery. We instinctively seek the restorative powers of water. It
is the element of our birth, the essence of our bodies, and the life blood
of the earth which can heal the soul.
-
April Showers
-
mixed media (March 2000)
-
Calla Lilies were photographed near Carmel
CA. The rest was electronically painted and added. "My heart leaps
when I behold a rainbow in the sky" -William Wordsworth
-
A Toast To Gaia
-
mixed media (1998)
-
A chalice is raised in toast to our mother, the earth. A few "mystery"
lines from The Charge of the Goddess by Doreen Valiente are engraved in
runes around the frame. The pentacle symbolizes balance, the circle is
renewal .
-
Moon Garden
-
mixed media ( (Summer 1999)
-
A faery child sits in a herb garden and holds an image of the moon in her
hand. Adapted from another graphic that was created for the nice people
at "Echoes of Enchantment"
Which by the way is a great online "esoteric" resource.
-
After The Rain
-
mixed media- photo with digital painting (1999)
-
created for theSpring Gallery Exhibit at EsotericArt.com
-
Pellinore
-
Spectracolors, ink, watercolors, on heavy illustration board (1998)
-
In Arthurian legend Pellinore was King of the Isles. In some versions he
beats a young Arthur in a fight but swears allegiance when he sees that
Arthur holds the sword Excalibur.
-
Crying For A Vision
-
digital painting (1999)
-
"Crying for a Vision" is a quest performed by many American natives as
a means of establishing a contact with the spirit world. It involves solitude,
meditation, fasting, ritual, prayer and sometimes hallucinogens,
as the questor hopes for a revelation from the spirits. These visions usually
come in the form of an animal. I have Cherokee ancestry, but have never
seen a vision. Maybe I should take stronger.....ummmmm meditation classes.
-
Sunflower
-
mixed media- manipulated digital photo & digital painting. (summer
2001)
-
Where do fairies go to get a tan?
-
Thanks to model Halie.
-
Muslin Angel (Spring 2001)
-
mixed media- photo manipulation & spectracolor and watercolor &
digital painting
-
An angel wearing a muslin cloak waits in the Garden of Gethsemane (did
I spell that right?)
-
I am basically of mixed religious beliefs but feel this story is very poignant
as Jesus waits out the night in this garden knowing he will be arrested
in the morning and will die soon. He must face the reality of his fate
alone and ultimately come to terms with it's inevitability. (and hey the
whole time his dang lazy friends are asleep, now there is something I can
identify with!)
-
the model again is the beautiful Stephenie.
-
La Magie (the magic) (Spring 2001)
-
photo manipulation
-
Photos were scanned and then manipulated with PSP 7. Bug and some water
droplets were added with the picture tube feature which I never thought
that I would find a use for.
-
Thanks to Jenna (in her modeling debut.)

Ouija?? Well it's as good a handle as any. It actually was a nickname
from collage that had nothing at the time, to do with talking boards..but
it is a long story. It is not my "magickal name" However I do have one
and would tell you what it is...but then ... of course I would have to
turn you into a newt.
This gallery is dedicated to those who have inspired me,
(you know who you are) and to all who dream. Thanks so much to all of my
visitors for your input and blessings
